How to Clean Carpets: A Comprehensive Guide

A clean carpet is a hallmark of a well-maintained home. Or at least, that’s what old people say. Whatever your opinions are on carpets, it is safe to say that a clean carpet makes for a cleaner, safer home. Since we’re halfway into the year (well, depending on how you count, that is), many will be doing their general cleaning in their homes. Of course, carpets are among those that are getting their much needed TLC. For budding homeowners though, it can get quite challenging. You don’t need to worry though. We compiled this guide so you can get yourself cleaning your beloved carpets in no time at all.
Invest in a Good Vacuum
One of the first steps when cleaning carpets is taking out the physical/visible dirt. This consists of removing lint, pet hair, dust, etc. that has embedded itself within the fibres of the fabric. To do this, bust out your vacuum cleaner and install the T-shaped implement on the main hose.
Move the implement back and forth in vertical strokes, carefully combing through the entire length of the carpet. Once you are satisfied that all the dirt has been lifted, it’s time to deep clean.
Test to Colourfast
If you are cleaning your carpet using a new product, it is best to do a colourfast test. This is to determine if the product is good for the carpet and will not ruin its fibres and colour. To do this, choose an obscure spot in the carpet, something that is usually hidden under furniture or an inconspicuous corner. Using a white cloth, apply the cleaning product and leave it (cloth and all) on the carpet. If the cloth happens to blot with the dyes of the carpet, it is best to switch to another product, until you succeed.
Use the Vacuum… Again
Now, take your vacuum again and fit it with the steam-cleaning implement. This usually has a triangular shape and is sometimes transparent. Following manufacturers’ instructions in both the cleaning chemical, as well as machine, carefully clean your way through the carpet. Using the same strokes as earlier, the vacuum will lift all the unwanted dirt and you can see the colors of the carpet brighten up. Because it is a bit wet, you need to take out the carpet and have it dried to prevent mildew and molds from forming, post-haste.
When the carpet is already set to return to its usual spot, clean the area first before laying it down. Once done, return to using your T-shaped implement to straighten out the fibres. This will also help in the long-term maintenance of the carpet.
